Increasing Safety with Situational Awareness.
After extensive research on GPS navigation units I chose the new Bendix/King AV8OR. With the lowest price I found of $639.00 www.marvgolden.com. I feel it's the best one out there for the money. For those familiar with the popular Garmin, what I like most in comparing the two, is it's simplicity. Garmin can often be intimidating with the many screens to choose from and the many steps necessary when you just want to enter an airport and fly to it. The AV8OR has a color touch screen making it incredibly easy to enter identifiers for either your flight plan or "direct to" entries and the capabilities of searching by such ways as entering a city name and getting a list of the airports and nav-aids associated with a city. It has both vertical and horizontal airspace markings and with a simple tap you can see the altitude limits of that airspace. Tap on a airport or nav-aid on the map and it gives you all the details. It has 9 user selectable data fields on the left for such things as Track data, Ground Speed, CDI display, a timer. It has both topical terrain or a profile view of terrain ahead. The database covers the entire US on one memory card. Information such as radio frequencies & runway lengths are there with the touch of a finger or the included stylus.
But the fun doesn't stop there. This GPS also has full feature street capabilities!! That's right, going on a trip somewhere, take the GPS with you, not so it doesn't get stolen, but so you can use it to navigate around town in your rental car. And even more fun is the IPOD like features. Download music, videos or eBook data to the unit for entertainment, just like an IPOD.
The unit also has XM Weather capabilities and now comes with traffic features similar to that found on the traffic functional G430.
Database upgrades are $35.00 each and are available every 28 days. But for basic situational awareness, one or two updates a year is satisfactory for me. The unit comes with a yoke mount, a car mount, an external antenna, a 12v power adapter, a soft case. However, the external antenna is not necessary as I have been able to receive more than the necessary satellites inside my home from just the internal antenna.
So if you have been considering a GPS to help improve your situational awareness for even the shortest of flights, I have to recommend the AV8OR from Bendix-King. If you’d like to see mine, let me know and I can bring it to our next event. Happy and Safe Flying!! - David
