COUPLE FLIES CESSNA 172 TO EUROPE AND BACK

Mel, Cascade Flyers and NGPA board member from Vancouver, was talking about his friends Eli and Bren, also from Vancouver, and their trip to and from Europe in their Cessna 172. Incredible! Mel loaned them survival suits and such for the North Atlantic portion of the crossing.

And, just to make it all even MORE cool - they are traveling with a Spot satellite tracker...so you can monitor their trip overlay-ed on a Google Map. 

 

NGPA NEWS BETTER THAN EVER

The Summer 2009 issue of NGPA News is better than ever; it along with the NGPA Navigaytor have won 7 design awards for 2009 alone!! Check it out! By the way, NGPA stands for National Gay Pilots Association, and includes not just pilots but members from all areas of aviation from flight attendants to air traffic controllers to mechanics.

Great writings from Steve W and Jim G, Step Four from Henry who is building a Rans S-19 home-built in Texas, the tragic demise of NGPA member Ryan M, and a great article by Cascade Flyers member Mel R about flying to minimums using a G1000, plus a review of the Women in Aviation conference earlier this year.

On page 22 you can see a hot guy with arms so big they need an FAA license! If you dont have a copy send a note through the list serve.

And remember, the NGPA Cape Cod Classic  is quickly approaching (9/18) - sign up asap!

MT. HOOD OREGON FLY-BY

Central Oregon pilots RS and EC went for a spin the other day and did a fly-around of Mt. Hood.

 

A great reminder that general aviation can be so much fun.

Elevation	Mt. Hood – 11,245 feet (U.S. Geological Survey Office, Vancouver, Wash.)
Facts	Base spreads over 92 miles; highest mountain in Oregon and fourth highest in the Cascade Mountain range; Indian name – “Wy’East”; dormant volcano
Average Snowfall	Average base is 175-200 inches per season measured from Timberline’s opening date until end of winter season in April. Average snowfall is 500-600" per year.

CLIFF MASS - GREAT LOCAL WEATHER ANALYSIS

Many of you may have heard Cliff Mass on Seattle's local NPR station - KUOW. My understanding is that Cliff is a weather professor at the University of Washington in Seattle and offers extremely interesting and very deep weather analysis of coming and already experienced local weather phenomena.

I believe Matt F introduced me to Cliff's blog - thanks Matt!

I encourage all local flyers to put Cliff Mass's blog as a bookmark in your Aviation Weather folder.
